// Leo Training Podcast

Great to recently have a chat with Joe De Leo from Leo Training

// We covered a lots of territory and as you can see from the topics its related to rowing, injuries, movement skills, strength training and the list goes on.

Its always been great to be able to have conversations like this and to share and explore learnings from sport. Joe comes from a rowing background and has combine his love of rowing with being a strength coach. LEO Training is the resource for strength & conditioning and injury rehabilitation for the sport of rowing.

Plus to hear about some of the great people he has interview was great as his direction feels aligned to much of what we took over the years. His site is definitely worth a look and its a solid resource to revisit.
Life's short

Less than 2 weeks ago I had the chance to get out on the bike and do a little ride to help support Tour de Cure TcD

// Why

Because CANCER SUCKS and I felt like I needed to get off my ass to do more. I lost my mum to cancer when I was 12 and more recently I have seen many family and friends go through their battles with some winning and some losing their fight. In some small way raising funds, awareness and providing a bit of inspiration is something I can do and considering I don't do research and I am not a doctor, its the best I feel I can do to help to with cancer.

Long story short this was an 'Impromptu Challenge' .. I thought bubble for a few years but nothing really planned until the Fri before. I love the idea of experimenting and testing ideas. So with that in mind I thought how quickly can we take a simple idea of riding from Sydney to Melbourne and use it to raise awareness and funds for a great cause. Simple right????

Let's explain further

About a week before this I was taking to Peter Brain from Pitcher Partners about some of my thinking about how I might support TdC during the rest of 2017. Plenty of ideas but something discussed was how to use a few activities to build up to a peak. This Sydney ride then become the start of that build up.

// WHO & HOW

Enter Andrew Pike from Rapha Australia and I have to say this guy is someone I really enjoy connecting with as each time we have a discussion something good comes out of it. I love people who make things happen or who help make things happen.

Next up was Geoff Combes from TdC who quickly swung into gear to help support the trip. Obvious Geoff loved the idea of the ride but equally he was keen to make sure we were safe and thankfully he found a super support drivers Ian and Linc. Again I love people who make things happen and under no preparation time he and the TdC team surged to the lead to help us get through this adventurous draft plan.
The journey started once flights we booked by Pikey and once on the ground things become very real. The thing was given our short lead time it meant both of us hadn't probably given it to much thought and this was a good and bad thing.
Given the lack of preparation we figured we would just ride from stop to stop which would be food food and water really. Obviously service stations aren't great food but they are pretty much all you have on long rides. So choc milks and anything from sausage rolls, to pies, cakes, other drinks and anything just to keep the calories in the body and hold off flat spots.
On any long ride everyone has ups and downs and prior to this moment of arriving in Eden which was after a horrible night which I struggled through and to have Pikey and Ian really did make it a team effort. During the long, slow, cold and delirious hours of the morning I had so many moments of wanting to stop and just make excuses for not going on. I haven't been able to explain this but this is when you find yourself and the drive to continue runs from the front or your mind to the back of your mind bouncing inside little a scared or playful little dog. The slow franticness is bizarre and all I can say is thoughts of a meaning or reasons why get twisted up will the fight, the will, the struggle and the resignations. Its ongoing and permanent and never seems to let up but one thing I knew was those hours of suffering, tiredness were and are nothing compared to what family and friends have gone through with cancer.

Did I say CANCER SUCKS and having lost my mum to it and seeing other family member have their fights with it and now friends I can't imagine fully but on occasions like this ride I sense a glimpse into the struggle and yet mine was a suede struggle because its a choice I was making to ride and push though. For this journey was about awareness, inspiration, reality checks and trying in a small way to make a difference.
Obviously this had some family and friends worried but safety was important and having Ian Salmon driving a support car and getting us through that first night was critical. That's before we realised this ride was actually going to end up taking two nights and two days of riding to complete.

To this point things had been a whole lot slower due to the head winds the day before and the amount of elevation gain. The road just kept going up then down, then up and down. Never was it overly flat from just south of Wollongong, NSW to Eden. Even after this the rolling country side just kept serving it up until Traralgon, Victoria which was 170km out of Melbourne.
How good is sunlight? It was amazing to be back and feeling the warmth and to be zipping along the road again with Pikey was a real joy. Still day two greeted us with headwinds but this was ok given we were warm again and the sense of covering distance had returned.

Still smiling and having a laugh. Bairnsdale stop for a meal, a chat and a snooze which we over did considering last thing I remember was saying we'll just have a 30min power nap. Having a riding buddy was great. Pikey was ridding really well and in particular on that second day he was strong and tapping out an awesome tempo. One thing you don't see hear but we mentioned was the local ridder Daniel who appear on the road with about 45km to go to Bairnsdale. He asked what the protocol was and Pikey said, mate sit on the front if you want and give us a tow. Daniel then proceeded to put us into quiet a spot of bother. How blood cool though to be whipping along at night on the country roads behind our own personal moto. Daniel was riding like 10 men and it really put some life back into us plus a fair amount of residual fatigue which would haunt us later on.
Admittedly this was awesome and so needed. Parma and a beer before a little snooze which was so helpful but so hard to restart from. Great to be around wonderful people supporting us and yet the scary thing was once back awake we would have a night of riding ahead and through flat, dead and fog consuming roads from Bairnsdale to Trafalgar.

The wheels had really come off as they say. The temperatures in the low lying farm land of Gippsland had us freezing as low single digits bit hard. The fog made us wet and so the chill from even going at 25kmh was bone aching. My hands and wrists were shot and some many little parts of my body hurt and the stop in Traralgon was a strange feeling of being almost through the second night but still a long way to go given the halting speeds which would only be over come by daylight and warmth.

Being put to sleep in the car for some 50min in Trafalgar was important. The main road even at 5am was busy and the fog really made for a strained visual and combines with the accumulating fatigue it didn't take much to accept to offer or a power nap.
The last stage from Trafalgar was solo as Pikey opted to end his ride there. The start after a snooze was jarring but once the fog lifted and warmth returned I was actually feeling pretty good again.
Here are the two strava files. They are in two parts due to a fail with my Garmin.

From Bega to Eden is missing. Probably a good thing as my lights pretty much went out. Not literally but it was a very dark period as I crawled up each hill and many of them just seemed to go on and on. So thats the missing 50km and 1000m between the two files. Plus interesting on the Garmin before I needed to pull over I had been averaging about 270watts so it was by no means an easy cruise down to Bega.

In the wrap up and reflections I have to say having a strong enough reason made a difference in completing this ride. Having a partner to ride with was amazing. Add to this having support people like Ian and Linc kept us safe and guided us when needed. Personally I am keen on my riding adventures and challenges so its all learning and all of it the highs and lows are what make an experience like this so rewarding.

You can't know night with out day, or day with out night. You can't know happiness with out sadness, joy with out suffering, pleasure with out pain. These are the many conditions of life. And like any journey it has a beginning and end. We can't know all these things until we experience them and that is why life is so precious and such a wonderful gift. We experience all these things and the contrasting moments provide the richness and reward that is at the heart of this gift. We learn about ourselves and about each other. We learn that life matters but what matters most is how we live and not just that we are alive.

Recently I have been doing more and more cycling and a few races which has been loads of fun. Here's the post Melb to Warny, M2W interview and I have to admit I am absolutely a novice when it comes to bike racing like this but have done a few races over the years and I am fascinated with the learning, the physicality, group dynamics, competitiveness, pressure and stress, unavoidable and avoidable mistakes, fatigue both physically and mentally, and all the mind chatter that goes with more challenging activities.

Cycling it a great outlet I find and one which is a natural extension from my rowing days. Its not like I am starting from scratch as I have ridden my bike in some form since I was 7 years of age. Why I say I am a novice is the simple reality of number of races I have done and compared to some very experienced guys and girls I have met over the last few years its amazing to hear just how many races some do and have done. Melbourne is great for this as some many different events are on weekly.

I mostly loved doing the Warny but certainly agree something needs to change as it did feel more dangerous than I remember for my only other time I raced in it in 2009. I loved the energy of 300 rider and the 100 years but some silly things probably could have been avoided. Its was a true test of awareness and luck as at times just staying upright required any and all skill on the bike. So all I haven't raced that much I have ridden my bike for what seems like ever. I guess what I am saying here is the experience of reddening is not like racing but certainly helps and although I don't see myself doing heaps of races each year I do enjoy jumping in and having a hit out as it improves the skills and sharpens the focus and makes the ridding more rich and meaningful.

Just put up the video interview from Cycling Maven, Mark Ferguson and now just adding a little something extra here.

Check out the linkedin post I wrote about the Melbourne to Warrnambool Classic:

To add to what I wrote there I thought a few things would be interesting to share.

It was the first time since London that I felt able to really operate at a high level in a competition. It reminded me why I miss rowing. I just love the feeling of being on the limit when pressure is on as it brings up some many great memories. The thing about being able to even compete is joyful and in terms of sharpened focus and holding awareness as some many things were happening around is bloody unreal.
The strangest things come to those who set out to experience something extraordinary. On the 14th March, 2015 at 8am a group of cycling friends set off from Beach Port, South Australia. The challenge was the 24hr Oppy Audax and along with some 20 other teams we would converge on Rochester, Victoria to arrive the follow morning.

Those strange things included: our start time, how we all came together as a team, a guy we met the day before our ride, the vastly different and unique experiences each rider would go through during the challenge, a near miss with an animal from the Australia’s coat of arms, the beauty of the Victorian countryside as a backdrop against our highs and lows on the road, a finally a strange realisation for the love and dislike of our bikes, the wind, the course, the fatigue, the pace, each other for a challenge like the Oppy offers much and takes its share. It’s safe to say we had it all and have endured and realised the reward of the bond that comes from a ride like this.

Our actually departure time from South Australia was to be 7.30am to account for the time difference between SA and VIC.

A riders wonderful encounter had taken place the day before after a prep ride. At the same cafe we walked into we met an amazing man, Douglas. We were in Beach Port to face our challenge and Douglas was passing through on a life journey on his bike. During the conversation we learnt he had ridden solo around Australia and we all found ourselves remarking on this amazing encounter. We invited Douglas to stay at the house we rented and over the next few ours found out much more about his journey. This was not his first round trip but his fifth since turning 70. During our time together Douglas got in touch with a mate of his. Glen O’Rourke was fortunate to get the chance to speak with Douglas’s friend, who had served in the armed forces with Oppy and used to train with him. George from Geelong who was 91 spoke to Glen and wished us luck. Amazing and as you can imagine it felt like destiny to come across Douglas and to tap into his adventurer spirit and it made for great conversation in the lead up to our departure from Beach Port the following morning.

We all wake and the hive of activity in the house as everyone readied themselves was think and fast. The air outside was cool and as we rolled down to our start point the beauty of the morning became clear. The sunshine was crackling across the ocean to the east of Beach Port and with a long stretched out jetty heading out to the water. We lined ourselves up, all smiles, and cheeky grins punctuated by laughter which probably masked the nervousness of us all.
Team Brevet as were named took off with our captain, Glen O’Rourke setting things up as we proceed to start our feasting on the bitumen meal ahead. The talk of doing the 24hrs came relatively easy in comparison to what we experienced. The Oppy is exciting, intriguing and by the nature of the ride its a great challenge. Our team was challenged, and our reasons for riding our bikes, and why we were doing the event together was significant under pressure. The reality and misty ideals were set on a collision course and it would creep up on us and find us during our attempt.

Our first 80kms was settled and pretty smooth. Apart from the developing head winds it was pretty uneventful and straight forward. It was not as straight forward as the roads we eventual covered but its felt good. Nature breaks were a good sign of hydration, and our legs and wheels seemed to turn over well together. Being smart early was the best call of the day. As the wind strengthen we shortened our turns. We all waited in anticipation for the right turn in our journey to make the most of the building winds which would be pushing us from behind.
Swing our bikes like tacking a boat on the ocean was a fantastic moment. The cross tail winds in our sails and the new invigorating speed and cadence in our legs indicated the first transition. The road often buzzing under our tires as we approached speeds in excess of 45km/h in sections. From the 80k mark to 400kms we averaged close to 39k/h and we probably didn’t notice the heat rising as temperature reached 36 degrees out on the road. The countryside was amazing and yet it required reminders to ensure we looked around. Small rises came and went and although at the time felt insignificant later I am sure would take a toll. A ride like the Oppy has you paying later for ever slight effort early. Its a hard thing to judge and we were loving the thrill of the ride and our chance to work together.

We had great support from many people on the road before the ride and after. The logistics of supporting five rides and having the designated stops set up with food and drink to fuel the effort was huge. It actually made it all pretty exciting but also complicated. You could say that when we reached our half way point and found ourselves ahead of schedule, tired but focused and certainly in the groove of journey. We had arranged a larger meal and break and made the most of changes in clothing, equipment and yet its become the start of the truly hard moments. Strange how things happen. We were going well and yet had no idea what lay ahead and what would unfold, and in effect suppress, drain, weigh heavily, claw, rip and tear at our team and each of us individually. The next 12 hours had all the making of a bad B grade moving attempting to be an inspiring, romance, thriller, comedy, drama, horror movie which went on for way to long.

The Oppy challenged our love of riding, our willingness to hold together, our hearts and minds were all stretched during the events that transpired over that long night. The day had been a joy in comparison. The night was like a dream and personally I found myself thinking when will this end. Alistair was our first team mate to come to grief with the demands. Its began with dry reaching and vomiting and was greeted with his inability to keep even the smallest of food and drink down. While this was taking place and Al labored on we had another intrusion on flats. Punctures become a talking point and frustration as we found ourselves standing still fixing tires. During this it became obvious Al was in a bad way and his attempts to ride on will go down as memorable etching in my mind. His will to go on and not give up was awesome. Momentum had swung and the wheels turned slowly for Team Brevet at this stage and as the light faded the nights darkness began to wrap around us.

During the onset of the night the eery feeling that the tide had turned was no more real than when Glenn Landers was setting the pace at the front. I remember thinking maybe 30min before that on these country roads Kangaroo’s were a real risk. Our speed was reasonable from memory and I was second wheel when from the right side of the road came bounding this majestic creature. Many words went through my mind and I am sure we all had our hearts in our throats. Glenn held his nerve as the Kangaoo zipped by no more than 1 to 2 meters in front of his wheel. It was near miss and I certain found the adrenaline was running high after. Strange though how its all seemed to happen in slow motion and I am sure if Glenn had of braked we all would have come down and if the Kangaroo was a mere sec behind on his crossing it would have brought us all down.

Together we completed some 120 000 pedal revolutions. We burned about 16 000 calories and used 180 000 heart beats. We covered 700km, wasted 3hrs of stationary time, had 5 punctures in 60min which inhibited our progress to 16km in that time. I can’t fathom the amount of food and drink we consumed, banana estimate 50 plus, and I am very aware of the fast food stop for three of us needed to make to get burgers, fries, and think shakes. Terrible I know but we needed fuel. As for water consumed it was close to 15 litres each for a total of 74 litres in the 24hrs. Yes this lead to a number of quick toilet stops and some of the funniest and strangest moments.

Another of our riders hit the wall with crippling back spasms which I am sure start long before the rest of us realised. I mean we were all trying to stretch and change position on our bikes but the longer than planned stop, the punctures and standing still, and then the final nail in our collective coffin. The 25km/h head wind from midnight started collecting and taking back all the advantages we had made. Scott Thomas was suffering with his back and just looked so uncomfortable on his bike that I was worried about possible long term damage.

Eventually our team on the road was brought to its knees but we were not broken. The contribution Al and Scott had made set us up to be able to keep fighting and hanging on. The two Glenn’s and I pressed on into the dark being hammered but the wind and tested in a very personal way. I know I was motivated to keep going for the team. I was driven to see if we could still reach our goal. The attempt could take away all dignity but it could not actually stop us. Sharing the road together, sharing the load, sharing passion and dislike for our bikes, sharing everything. Even chamois cream, I mean I never thought I would willingly grab and reach for anything to help ease the pain and discomfort. Our captain was probably the ultimate inspiration. Our attempt would only count if three of us finished. Glenn Landers and I realised we let at least a bit better the Glen O’Rourke. Glen explain at about 570kms that he was on the edge and in a somewhat competitive way I flashed back with records do get broken unless your on the edge. The strange things was that I think we all started to fully appreciate things at this stage it had taken 18 hours and the light went on in my head. With Al, Scott, Glen, and Glenn we had well and truly found all we needed out on the road. All the we could have hoped for from ourselves and each other. Each person at this time rode to their limit and the Oppy idea was delivering in spades.

We grovelled along the heavy roads some where in north Victoria battling winds like a crowd in a mosh pit. Being pushed in every direction and trying to find some rhythm to manage the pulse, push, turn, sway, twitching of the bike underneath. Our speed and been ranging from 24 to 33km/h but in a sense we ending up spending much more time just trying to keep our bikes going forward.
Our captain was riding like a hollow man. Vacant and empty for what the ride had taken out of him but I like to think that in the emptying process it all made space for new realisation and learning. A vessel can only be used to have new insights when space is created. As we hit 700km Glen had warned that he would stop. At 23hrs 26min Glenn Landers and I realised Glen had eased off and as we turned back to meet him where he had dropped his bike and had sat on the edge of the road near the long grass. He was now well and truly on the edge. Tears filled his eyes and I like to think in the moment all of us watched and reflected as our Oppy 2015 was complete. Glen marked the end and the symbolic nature of his position on the side of the road was in respect for the enormity of the journey we had all been together on.

We all hugged each other, consoling each other and remarking at just how amazing it had all been. The final hours were just down right tough. Nothing can prepare you for it. I was riding and avoiding falling asleep by standing and pedalling out on the saddle. Personally I called on all my reserves to stay the course and to hold onto the aspiration of getting to the end with our team. Each of us will have a story to tell and I can tell you that once the sun began to rise again it was like a dream was ending and the marvel of warmth and light became a finally to it all. Glen Landers and I took a moment with the other guys and he eventual asked if I still want to ride to Rochester. I agreed and nodded with a heavy head but even the idea of getting to the Oppy Statue was a little energising.

This is when you're on a group ride and want to ensure the surge of speed doesn't catch the lead rider off guard to much. Yep yep, works as its simple and can be said with urgency and joy. The excitment of the surge and the rush of the acceleration is outstandingly tangible. So why am I saying it here?

Simple I have been off the radar, the charter and yet still very much in the game and so it like I am surging from the group to laye down this post and to share a surge of energy on my blog. A blog which has sat dorment from my perspective and still funny how users are active as the email notifications show people reading old posts. Interesting to have writen it for so many years as an athlete and to know find myself for the last 12 months transition in my new role as National Team Head Coach.

Today I spoke to someone about learning to be in a coaching boat and learning not to be out in a rowing boat and probably more importantly coming to grips with not being engaged in the process of rowing a boat. To not be engaged daily with crew mates and my coaches is somewhat strange and I am probably coming to grips with the reality of the change in my life. I still have motivations, drive and so often I become annoyiong in the coaching boat because its not my boat or my crew and yet I get the feeling and thoughts of what it might be like and what might be possible. I am active and yet at the same time inactive. I am thinking and working to let go of certain thoughts. I am wanting and relaising its not about my want. Frustration flashes into my presence and yet I am not the one who should feel it.

All this is strange and so I guess this post is about just acknowledging it and to say I am aware of my role and still working out what I can write about as I can't just blurt out thoughst and ideas, experiences or examples as they are not nessecarially mine to share. I am working out what I can share and so I have layed low and stayed off the charter but today I thought I could venture into this space and provide a few things.

This was prompted by the interview yesterday which I posted about earlier. I thought after taling to Rebecca that I should consider engaging through my blog again but that I need to think about how to best do this.

For now I will share something simple. I watched rowing today and loved it. I love seeing a few boats working things out. I really loved seeing one of our team top athletes appearing to be coming through a challenging period since the games. The visual reward was seeing significant change and the sense of celebration I felt.

Simple reminders - Posture / extension / connection / drive / posture ... I was glorious to see and yet still untested I felt like the smile I had on my face when talking to him was a sign of just how enjoyable my role can be as Head Coach. Seeing change. Seeing challenge. Seeing reward. Its a pleasure and one I am learning to acknowledge and come to terms with as the new perspective is such a different one from the past.

Its been awhile since I last created a post so I won't even try to catch up on everything just a few highlights.

Highlights:

Being part of the many changes with the Australia Rowing Team through my role as Head Coach.

Developing some great relationships with other National coaches that I am learning greatly from. Obviously my role is to help lead our direction and setting the strategy with the High Performance Team has me involved in being the connector to our National Coaches.

Watching and seeing in 12 months some great advances in our athletes group. We now have some solid performers as key benchmarks in each of our categories. This was seen at the recent Dec TT's with many athletes and crews positioning themselves at the front of each category with very credible performances which show some positive trending.

Having our Category Lead Coaches take up the challenges of planning and leadership with each of their categories. This is a great initiative and one I feel will make a great difference as we continue forward with categories like our ParaRowing, Women's Sculling, Men's Sweep, Women's Sweep, Men's Sculling, Men & Women's LWT Sculling and Sweeping.

We are about to go live with out Athlete Learning & Performance Planning.. Yes this has taken some work behind the scenes and many contributors and finally we are close to launching it with our Athletes and we serve as a platform for further reflection, analysis, action and sharing and collaboration between athletes and coaches.

Another highlight has been working with some great people at Rowing Australia. Its been amazing with working with Chris O'Brien in our different roles and to be again working with Jaime Fernandez who I rowed with way back in 1995. Wayne Diplock was a 1992 Olympian in the eight with Jaime and its been great working with him in the HP Team, with Chris and Jaime. Add to this all the people from the RA centre in Canberra who make everything happen. Plus we have a unique situation with all the key State Institute Head Coaches and staff involved in rowing, its amazing the network of people which reaches out through coaches, athletes, states, clubs and all the providers of services like medical, physio, sport science, S&C, massage and the list goes on. Being part of this is pretty bloody amazing and unique.

My final two highlights are being able to enjoy the precious time with my family when home. Our kids are growing up so fast and I have traveled a lot this year but the reward has been when home just making the most of the time together. Recent we got the kids new bike and I found myself in the park near by in St Kilda with my wife just watching them ride around and around. I joy was a pleasure to watch. My wife has been an exceptional support through this last year. Its strange and exhilarating to think we have been married since 1999.

Finally 7 weeks ago I made a decision to get my self fit and health again. With all the travel in 2013 I was starting to feel physically poor. The contrast to being an athlete training daily had increased and so I decided a change was required. I set my mind to getting back on the bike and thought simply I just need to get a routine going and break the back of feeling unhealthy. The first two weeks was the hardest but after those two weeks of 500km's I was away and have since settled in to a routine of 450-550km per week with 12 - 16 hrs of activity. I now feel heaps better and am loving being back on the bike.

ARTeam - Vision & Values

Over the last 7 months working with the Australian Rowing Team has been great and yet we have only just started to scratch the surface of whats possible and whats needed. It will be years before we as a High Performance Leadership Team see the outcome of many of the decisions and initiatives we have started with and with so much more to come it will be interesting to see what ca be created. This is all combined with a team of coaches and athletes from all over Australia. With all the different centres and locations we have been working to support each to be the best training environment it can be. Its the teams of people at each centre which will make this happen so our HP Leadership Team are really only the guides and initiators.

With Chris O'Brien as Director and Jamie Fernandez as his deputy, then Wayne Diplock as our operations and team manager its been great to build our small team to help guide and work for our whole team. Now this is not all, but we have National leaders in various fields from medical, physiotherepy, sport science, strength & conditioning, psychology, and nutrition. With this comes a vast network of practitioners and specialists working specifically with all our key coaches in each major training centre. So we have all these satellite centres all working to be the best they can be and what we have been working hard to create is the engagement, connection, the integration and closeness which is critical give the vastness of our Country.

This is one of the main reasons for creating this single page for the ARTeam Vision & Values. Its been part of a review process which began after London and has included much of the work and meeting with athletes, coaches and support staff.
Thought I would share it here ...rudderfishhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04278628747094878311noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36567786.post-5111248013826047772013-07-03T19:05:00.000+10:002013-07-03T19:05:25.439+10:00Time Warp: Bosbaan Experiences & Great MemoriesIt was really cool this weekend seeing some old faces who I must say inspired me as a young athlete. These faces were of the men from the 1996 Dutch eight. Many of them legends and it was funny to be chatting to Nico Rienks stroke of that crew and to be honest all I could think was this how amazing he was when I recall seeing them in 1995 for the first time and through the 96 year as they made the eight event their own. Why I like what they did had so much to do with the way the rowed and the flow. So standing there some 16 years on I was enjoying our casual chat about rowing. As I said over the weekend I spotted many of his crew mate from the period and must say I enjoyed seeing them all looking like they are playing a role in the Dutch rowing now.

In 1996 I recall the Dutch eight doing work on the course while we trained in the four. We did a lot of paddling on speed and each lap they were doing sets of 20 plus strokes on rate 40 and making it look easy. they looked like they had so much time. The relaxation was amazing. The call would get made as they came up behind us and sitting in the bow of the four I could see the whole crew swinging together so smoothly but with a loose speed which was exciting. All great memories. Should add here to the best argument I have had with the crew I am in happened in 96 with the four. It had to do with if fish feel the cold. I will leave the rest as it become quiet absurd but in retrospect bloody funny.

After this I started thinking about the times I had raced on the Bosbaan. Then a funny thing happened. The team manager Wayne Diplock and I were under the tent near the finish line when I guy came up and introduced him self. He made mention of an eights race in 1998 which we put together the two Australian fours. The Sydney based four was winning selection races in Australia and our Melbourne based four had raced them over the year since the guys returned to the sport post 1996 Olympic break. So this guy started talking about this Australian eight that went close to breaking the World record and asked if I was Drew, from the crew. I said yes and he said the cox who assisted us during the event who was Dutch was at the event today. Wilem was his name and this guy brought him over to meet up after all these year. So there we were talking about that day. He was really a club cox who was available to help us out. From start to finish he just kept saying this is very good, very F&%k'n good. The when he asked by our stroke James Stewart to call us up to the line the little English he knew at the time was used. I recall F Off being used for each step and we went within .2sec of the WBT. It was heaps of fun and I remember thinking those are the experience in rowing which stay with you. So today I got to relive it all over again.

Then I thought about going to Amsterdam in 2000 after the Vienna World Cup when I had made it back after my serious back injury that year. I must admit going to the Bosbaan on this occasion was short sighted and with miserable conditions my back started playing up again and we pulled out of the racing if I recall currently. Two weeks later I was out of Lucern and thought my rowing career was over.

You could say I have had some great experiences on the Bosbaan and mixed also. Over the last two days it was great to fly in and watch Kim Crow our Australian WX1. So new memories now are seeing her take on a classy International field with the current Olympic and the former Olympic champions in the Women's single scull. Kim made a simple statement of intent and has set her International season up well. After the racing she said we need to get apple pie and so our small group headed up to the cafe and enjoyed the best bloody apple pie with ice cream and cream I think I have ever had. Another great memory.
Seems Eton World Cup like the Sydney World Cup suffered from poor turn outs from various Countries.

Call this what you want but I say its a bit sad that some of our sports major events to earn great support. I get crews don't want to race in every event and many Countries pick and choose their marks, it was just with a touch of sadness I stood in the boat park in Eton and though where is our sport going if even with once of the best World Cup crowds ever some events had few few crews. Its not a criticism just an observation. The crowed turned out but half the elite performers were on hand to enjoy the atmosphere.

Personally I think in my Country a decision was made after Beijing not to support a Women's eight for example and I understand the thinking behind the approach. Problem is, that as one of the bigger nations in terms of team size I feel the Australian Rowing Team has an obligation to support more events with numbers or else these event start becoming non events. If our team and others don't boat crews for various reason eventually I am sure its seen by sponsors, TV and even our own sporting community as systemic of possible other things not functioning as well as we need for our sport to stand out and be proud

So I stood in the boat park and wondered why the low numbers and where is it leading our sport. As a nation we brought a small group but will have a larger team in South Korea. I wondered about our decision. Sure it helped us target things better but it felt a bit of a missed opportunity in a way yet we as a team achieve close to expectation given the targets for our crews.

Anyway that was just an observation. As for my experience as Head Coach of the Australian Rowing Team I loved it. We hit our marks pretty well and although the standard difference for many of our crews is obvious I felt satisfied our athletes and coaches worked well to make the most of their preparation and the racing opportunity give what I had seen back home.

Women's Pair
Had a bit a shake start even though they launched themselves as the favoured GB crew in the heat it was a World apart a perfect learning for the girls to realise the level of World Class athletes in a boat class they seem to understand really well. Our girls worked hard and show good speed early but I am sure they will agree they didn't row the boat as well as they would like and need too. In time they will develop the understanding and care for moving together which in pair returns the favour. The deeper understanding of keeping their boat at speed will come. The effort is not the question it's the subtle deliver of fast and efficient boat speed. Bill Tait as the coach has a great template for this crew after last years silver medal at the Games, but is loving the challenge of a completely new crew who can create their own approach to making a pair fly.

Men's Four
Obvious the change to this boat from last year have meant the need to re-establish themselves and to learn about the new crew dynamics. The guys did a good job of executing what they have been working on and the rhythm is growing and as they continue to push themselves they will carry better speed in the back end of races. Funny thing is having been in the boat last year much of what they are doing is looking like its heading in the right direction. Some of the base work looks amazing at times and in time will transfer up through the gears and as they start to hit race rates consistently it will be exciting to see how far they can take this boat this year. Tom Laurich has done a great job as coach coming from U23's him self to take the leads with this crew and is using his experience as an athlete and now coach to find the balance between effort, ease and relentless rhythm.

Men's Quad
This was an interesting thing to observe with the guys initially struggling to find the groove of their movement together. As the week progressed they became more certain and I thought raced sensibly to pick up places and have now set themselves well for this training block. Plenty of learning going on for the going as its a real mix of experience, inexperience, sculling backgrounds with sweep backgrounds. Having spent a few rows with the guys now in Italy I am liking the effort and concentration going into the rowing and I am sure it will pay dividends. Their coach Rhett Ayliffe is working with the guys to ensure targets are meet through this next phase and his enthusiasm for competition will have the guys picking their mark for Lucern and later in South Korea.

Women's Quad
The girls who have fun off the water and then show boldness once out on the training track and more so in racing is good to see. Huge learning happening as they are learning to go from the U23 ranks last year into the senior event this year. Their heat was ok but in the final the lined up and put it out their early to the satisfaction of their coach Jason Lane. Sure the girls lost contact with the top two crew but that will with greater awareness for the moments in the race and the realisations of whats possible for them.

We are now into our Italian block and as the fatigue builds I know all are motivated to make this time count. We have talked about what it means to be part of our Australia Rowing Team. We are all proud and humble in a way as many of the athletes and coaches are new to the senior team. Its something to cherish, to be grateful for and to take with both hands and to make the most of.
Have to admit its a bit of a rushed post as I am in the middle of completing some work before leave for out National Team tour. Why I am posting these images are they are a great example of athletes seeking out and face challenges. This was a camp conducted back in late 2012 with many of these athletes making it onto the Australian Rowing Team its great to think how important moments like these are. Moments where athletes have realisations, moments when athletes open up, push themselves, learn about themselves and those around them. They wake up in a way and its becomes clear they have to make choices and take action.
